Situation
Barkers Hill Cottage lies on high ground on a narrow village lane on the edge of Donhead St Andrew, a pretty southwest Wiltshire village in the beautiful Nadder Valley. Donhead St Andrew comprises many period cottages and houses together with a well know village inn and parish church. The village is surrounded by arguably some of the most beautiful country in the area being undulating and lightly wooded and containing pretty villages and hamlets. The neighbouring villages of Ludwell and Semley both have village stores/post offices and primary schools. The nearby town of Shaftesbury, which traces its origins back to Saxon times, has facilities for most everyday needs including national and independent retailers, professional services, cafes, inns and hotels together with a small hospital and health centre. Other towns in the area include the abbey town of Sherborne, the Georgian town of Blandford Forum and the cathedral city of Salisbury. The extremely popular village of Tisbury lies to the east with its excellent range of independent shops and the additional benefit of a mainline railways station to London (Waterloo). To the north of Shaftesbury runs the A303, which links with the M3, and provides east/west road travel and the regional centres of Bath/Bristol and Bournemouth/Poole are within motoring distance, as is the beautiful Dorset coast.
